In our experience on exposed Melbourne decks, UltraDeck Timber Oil typically needs a maintenance inspection every 12 months. Coverage rate is 10-14m2 per litre, with a recoat time of 3 hours in ideal conditions.

Intergrain UltraDeck Slip Resistant

Best for: Decks around pools, walkways, stairs, ramps and any area where safety underfoot is a priority.

UltraDeck Slip Resistant contains Intergrain’s UltraGrip technology – a subtle textured finish that reduces the tendency for decking and timber walkways to become slippery when wet. It carries a certified P4 slip rating, which is the recommended standard for wet areas in Australian residential settings. Available in Natural, Merbau, Spotted Gum and Jarrah tones with a matt sheen.

Maintenance timing is similar to Timber Oil at 12 monthly inspections. Coverage rate is 10-14m2 per litre.

Intergrain Natural Stain (previously UltraDeck Timber Stain)

Best for: Treated pine, Cypress Pine, Jarrah, Merbau, Spotted Gum – and vertical surfaces like screens and fences.

NaturalStain is the most versatile and longest-lasting product in the range. It is a high performance water-based stain that Intergrain says lasts 5 times longer than traditional oil-based decking oils. Where UltraDeck Timber Oil is recommended for hardwoods only, NaturalStain is also specified for treated pine – making it the correct choice for a large proportion of Melbourne decks built with treated pine rather than hardwood. If your existing coating has failed, a deck restoration may be required before staining.

NaturalStain is more viscous than Timber Oil – thicker product means better coverage, richer colour and a longer-lasting finish. In our experience, NaturalStain typically lasts 15-18 months on exposed Melbourne decks versus around 12 months for Timber Oil. The darker the tint chosen, the longer it tends to last.

NaturalStain is particularly useful in several situations:

• Treated pine decks – Intergrain specifies NaturalStain (not UltraDeck Timber Oil) for treated pine. If your deck is built from treated pine, NaturalStain is the correct product choice.
• Vertical surfaces – timber screens, feature walls, batten fences and vertical cladding benefit from a stain rather than an oil. NaturalStain’s higher viscosity means it adheres better and lasts significantly longer on vertical surfaces.
• Hiding imperfections – the thicker consistency and richer pigment covers minor surface marks, weathering and discolouration more effectively than Timber Oil.
• Maximum maintenance interval – if you want to go as long as possible between maintenance coats, NaturalStain in a mid-to-dark tone is the best option in the current range.
• Colour change – with 16 colour options including Charcoal, Ebony, Driftwood, Bondi Sand, Frosted White and Rich Chocolate, NaturalStain gives homeowners far more design flexibility than the 4 tones available in Timber Oil.

Coverage rate is 6-12m2 per litre, with a recoat time of just 2 hours in ideal conditions.

Intergrain vs Cabot’s: What Is the Difference?

Both Intergrain and Cabot’s are owned by DuluxGroup, and their product ranges overlap significantly. Cabot’s Aqua Deck and Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Oil are comparable products in the same category.

In our experience, the performance difference between them is not dramatic. Both are water-based, both are tinted, and both perform well on Australian hardwood decks. The key differences we notice in practice:

• Intergrain is positioned as the premium range and gives a slightly richer, more refined matte finish
• UltraDeck may last two to three months longer than the equivalent Cabot’s product in comparable conditions
• Cabot’s is more widely available at hardware stores, making it easier for homeowners to apply maintenance coats themselves
• NaturalStain has a significantly wider colour palette than Cabot’s equivalents, including very dark and very light tones

Neither product is dramatically superior. The preparation of the surface before application makes far more difference to the final result than the choice between these two brands.

How Long Does the Intergrain Range Last in Melbourne?

The 5-7 Year Full Resand Cycle

This is something most decking product reviews never mention – and it is one of the most practically useful things we can share with Melbourne homeowners.

With any Intergrain product applied and maintained correctly, most homeowners can keep their deck in excellent condition for 5-7 years without a full sand-back. Here is how the cycle works:

Initial service: We sand the deck back completely using our waterless Terrassen-Blitz soft-brush sanding system, removing all old coatings, grey timber and surface contamination. We then apply the appropriate Intergrain product – usually two to three coats.

Annual maintenance (Years 1-5): Each year, or when the deck shows signs of wear, a single maintenance coat can be applied without sanding. No professional needed for most straightforward decks – homeowners can apply maintenance coats themselves between professional services. The key is not to let the deck reach the point where the timber has greyed out or the coating has fully failed.

Full resand (Year 5-7): After 5-7 years of maintenance coats, two things happen. Areas in full sun have weathered more than covered areas. And covered areas start to build up coating layers from repeated annual applications. At this point we recommend a full sand-back to level the surface, remove the build-up and start the cycle fresh.

This cycle – initial sand, annual maintenance, full resand at 5-7 years – is the most cost-effective way to protect a timber deck long-term.

Preparation Before Applying Any Intergrain Product

First-time application or after a gap: The deck must be sanded back before Intergrain products are applied for the first time, or if the previous coating has failed, the deck has greyed, or an incompatible product was used previously. Intergrain recommends using their UltraPrep Timber Cleaner and UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover as part of the preparation process.

Annual maintenance coat: If the deck is being maintained within the recommended timeframe and the existing coating is still in reasonable condition, no sanding is required. A clean, dry surface is sufficient.

The water bead test: Sprinkle water on the deck. If it beads, the existing coating has some life remaining. If it soaks straight in, preparation is needed before a new coat will absorb and bond properly.

On Merbau Decks Specifically

Merbau is one of the most common decking timbers across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. Both UltraDeck Timber Oil and NaturalStain perform very well on Merbau – both products list it as a specified substrate. The tinted finish enhances Merbau’s natural red-brown tones beautifully and the matte result suits the timber’s character.

One thing to be aware of with Merbau is tannin bleed – a natural process where the tannins leach out, particularly when new or after a full sand-back. Intergrain recommends treating new Merbau timber with UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover before coating. This is normal and settles over time, and the tint in Intergrain products helps even out colour variation from tannin movement.
